Digital TV and the Capitol Connection

The Capitol Connection provides all digital business television programming and local broadcasters offer programming in the digital format.

Digital TV Basics

To view the digital Capitol Connection (QAM) and the local broadcast channels (ATSC), you need both a QAM and an ATSC tuner.  QAM is a technical term for a digital cable TV standard.  Local broadcast channels (4, 5, 7, 9 and 26) use the ATSC standard.   Any TV connected to the Capitol Connection will need a QAM/ATSC tuner which means you don’t need a set-top box.
If your TV does not receive QAM and NTSC signals, contact capcon@gmu.edu or 703-993-3100 to get help.

Is digital the same as high definition?

No, a digital signal is the same as high definition. The Capitol Connection channels are digital and so are the local broadcast channels. Some programs on the local broadcast channels are available in high definition.

Computers and Digital TV Programming

Windows XP and Vista compatible tuners for USB2 ports are available in USB stick form.  As with the TV, the USB tuner must be able to receive QAM and ATSC signals.  USB stick tuners store all channels in memory and switch fairly quickly between channels.
